AFGE Represents 750,000 Public Servants Across the Country, Including More Than 17,000 in Nebraska
Lincoln, NE — Today, Chris Backemeyer, Democratic candidate for Congress in Nebraska’s First District and a former senior U.S. official on Iran, released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted on a War Powers Resolution directing the president to remove U.S. Armed Forces from unauthorized hostilities in Iran. The resolution failed to pass the House by a vote of 212-to-219.
“Nebraskans deserve leaders who ask tough questions, demand accountability, and put the nation’s security above partisan loyalty. Today’s vote was a clear failure of leadership and a failure to uphold the Constitution.
“Nearly a week ago, President Trump unilaterally launched this war of choice—a reckless, costly, and dangerous move—without congressional approval or making the case to the American people.
“The administration still has no coherent strategy, timeline, or clear rationale. The chaos has destabilized the region, claimed the lives of six American service members, including Sgt. Tietjens of Bellevue, and left thousands of American citizens stranded. And early cost estimates are already exorbitant, at a time when rising costs are hurting families here at home.
“Nebraskans will remember who put partisan loyalty above the Constitution.”
