Backemeyer continues to build support in Nebraska’s First Congressional District
Lincoln, NE — Today, Chris Backemeyer, Democratic candidate for Congress in Nebraska’s First District and a former senior U.S. official on Iran, released the following statement after the Trump Administration launched military strikes on Iran:
“Americans don’t want war with Iran.
“We’ve seen this playbook before: claims of urgency, misrepresented intelligence, and military action that risks dragging our country into an unnecessary and costly conflict. The administration must clearly explain its strategy, the risks involved, how those risks will be mitigated, and the likelihood of success — something it should have done well before taking military action.
“As we stare down the possibility of another open-ended conflict, Congress must be immediately called back into session to vote on a War Powers Resolution. The American people deserve transparency and every single member of Congress has a duty to their constituents to go on the record regarding this dangerous conflict.”
Chris was a lead negotiator on the Iran Nuclear Deal, served as the White House Director for Iran, and later served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iran at the U.S. Department of State.
