Lincoln, NE — Today, Chris Backemeyer, the Democratic candidate for Nebraska’s First Congressional District, announced that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) added the seat to its “Districts in Play” program. The DCCC’s Districts in Playare competitive districts held by vulnerable Republicans across the country that will determine the House majority.
The Backemeyer campaign enters the general election with growing momentum, including a recent independent poll not commissioned by the campaign showing Backemeyer within striking distance of Republican incumbent Rep. Mike Flood, with Flood at 45% and Backemeyer at 43%. The campaign has also earned support from labor organizations, local elected officials, and national groups. Backemeyer won a competitive primary in May by 15 points.
“Mike Flood has made life too expensive for Nebraska’s working families. Flood has backed the war of choice in Iran causing gas prices to skyrocket, voted to kick nearly 50,000 Nebraskans off their health care, and protected tariff taxes raising prices on everything from groceries to clothing. This November, Nebraskans are going to fire Flood and elect a representative who is going to put them and their concerns over D.C. party bosses,” said DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene.
“Nebraskans are tired of politicians who spend more time playing political games than solving problems. Mike Flood has spent years in elected office, but what do we have to show for it? Families are struggling with rising costs for groceries, gas, healthcare, and housing. Farmers are facing higher expenses and uncertainty in the markets they rely on. Our neighbors deserve a leader who will put people first, show up every day, and fight for lower costs and real opportunities for hardworking Nebraskans to get ahead,” said Chris Backemeyer.
The campaign has built a broad coalition of support from labor organizations, local elected officials, and national groups, reflecting growing momentum across Nebraska’s First District. Recent endorsements include the Sierra Club, Nebraska State AFL-CIO, Nebraska State Council of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), State Senator Victor Rountree, Lincoln City Councilmembers Justin Carlson, Bennie Shobe, Sändra Washington, and Brodey Weber, New Politics, Foreign Policy for America, and Must Win.
